Sir,

B.

U.S.N.A. "ALEXANDER".

Hongkong, China April 2, 1906.

I wish to make the following report to you, of an accident that occurred in the harbour of Hongkong, between the U.S.A. "ALEXANDER" and a Chinese junk at 4.00 P.M. March 28, 1906.

Having finished coaling the U.S.S. "BALTIMORE", I left, and while proceeding to an anchorage, a junk by the name of Tung On Tai tacked ship right under my bow, not one hundred feet away; but before said junk could gain headway and get clear, he drifted across my bow and stove in three planks on his port quarter, causing him to fill and sink.

The "ALEXANDER" had no headway, as she was about to anchor. I rang "full speed" astern, trying to avoid a collision, as the ship was heavily laden and could not gather sternway before the junk was across the "ALEXANDER'S" bow, sinking in twenty-eight minutes.

I had a life-boat lowered and took off the crew. There was no loss of life or injuries. There was no Captain on board the junk at the time, he, the Captain being ashore. Owner's name Ah Young, No. 362, Queen's Road.

Senior Officer Present,

Hongkong, China.

Very respectfully,

(Sd.) A. E. Gove,

Master, U.S.N.A. "ALEXANDER".
